   OTTAWA– The following letter was sent today to the new Fisheries Minister.
   In a letter to your predecessor Fisheries Minister Robert Thibault, Washington State Senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles requested that Canada not permit the development and expansion of sablefish aquaculture “without first undertaking comprehensive environmental and socio-economic impact assessments.”
   In his response the Minister misled Senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles. In an August 12, 2003 letter Canada’s Minister of Fisheries and Oceans wrongly advises that Canada undertakes thorough environmental and economic risk assessments of the effects of the development and expansion of net pen sablefish aquaculture in British Columbia’s coastal waters...    OTTAWA– “The Report of the Transportation Safety Board into the sinking of the Cap Rouge II in the summer of 2002 addresses the condition of the vessel and the actions of the captain and crew prior to and immediately after the capsizing but does not critically examine the failed rescue attempt by the Coast Guard,” said John Cummins, M.P.    OTTAWA– Intimidated by the Cheam Band, the top brass in the Department of Fisheries and Oceans has decided not to lay charges against Sid Douglas and other Cheam Band members who attacked Fishery Officers when they interrupted their illegal fishing.... (more)

   "A prominent federal Liberal was at my office recently and he informed my staff that Geoff Plant, BC Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Treaty Negotiations, was not happy with Delta Council given their withdrawal from the treaty process. Minister Plant, my staff was informed, did not “suffer fools gladly.”
   What I propose to do over the next few minutes is to make it clear who is foolish and who’s not and who’s informed about the implications of treaty settlements and who isn’t.
   Now after ten years in federal politics I know my objective is unlikely to be achieved completely, but from the get go, I want you to know I support your withdrawal from the negotiating process, which is fraudulent at best, and a colossal waste of tax payers dollars".... (more)
