Absolute Discharge for Cummins

OTTAWA--Judge Thomas in B.C. provincial court today gave John Cummins, M.P. (Delta-South Richmond) an absolute discharge.

Although the Judge found Cummins guilty of a "technical violation" of the Fisheries Act for his fishery protest in 1996, he commented that Cummins' had acted in good faith when testing the legality of the aboriginal commercial fishery regulations.

In reminding the Department of Fisheries that their regulations were illegal, the Judge said that all were bound by the rule of law--both citizens and government.
