Dear Editor:

Re: The city's not for spawning

British Columbia Report, May 4, 1998

The remarks attributed to me in the article, "the city's not for spawning," do not reflect my views on the need to protect fish habitat. They are, in fact, a recipe for disaster.

Scientists advise that some 214 coho stocks are at high risk of extinction. The decline in coho stocks on the West Coast can in no small part be attributed to the loss of urban streams.

As an example the construction of the Vancouver Island highway created problems in almost thirty coho producing streams. While not all the streams might be classified urban, the damage caused results from the urbanization of the east coast of Vancouver Island.

If we are to revive and protect fish stocks in B.C. efforts must be made to revive and protect urban salmon producing streams.

Yours sincerely,

John Cummins, M.P.
