Disagreement over Nisga'a
Departments Can't Agree on What the Treaty Means
OTTAWA--"A disagreement has developed between Fisheries and Indian Affairs as to what impact the Nisga'a Treaty will have on the fishing industry in British Columbia", said John Cummins, M.P. (Delta-South Richmond).
Cummins is Vice-Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans.
The Fisheries Committee requested a briefing from DFO officials.
Initially DFO agreed to appear on March 11th. At the last minute officials claimed they could not be present because they were attending treaty negotiations in British Columbia.
This morning the Committee learned that DFO did not intend to reschedule the cancelled briefing.
"Why has David Anderson refused to allow his bureaucrats to brief the Fisheries Committee on the impact the Nisga'a Treaty will have on the fishery?"
"Why did the government sign this Treaty if they did not understand what it meant?", said Cummins.
