Assistance of the RCMP Requested

OTTAWA--John Cummins, M.P. (Delta-South Delta) today made the following request to the Solicitor General for the intervention of the RCMP:

Hon. Lawrence MacAulay, P.C., M.P.
Solicitor General of Canada
House of Commons
Ottawa, Ontario
K1A 0A6

Dear Minister:

The Fraser River has been closed to fishing for conservation reasons. Members of the Cheam Band accompanied by their militia in battle gear have fished since the beginning of August in contravention of the fishery closure.

Fishery Officers and members of the public have been physically and verbally threatened by these thugs in military fatigues. I too was confronted by them while observing the illegal fishery. The R.C.M.P. have failed to act.

I would ask that you ensure that public order is restored. Canadian citizens and Peace Officers should not be threatened by masked and armed men in combat gear. There is no place in Canada for a private army.

Immediate action is required.

Yours sincerely,

John Cummins, M.P.
